It is a genus of tropical hardwood tree in the family Verbenaceae, native to the south and southeast of Asia, and is commonly found as a component of monsoon forest vegetation. They are large trees, growing to 30-40 m tall, deciduous in the dry season.

The name teak is from the Malayalam word tekka. It introduced to Sri Lanka in 1680 by the Dutch.

The rare beauty, golden brown luster, decorative grain and unique properities have made it one of the most demanded and valuable hardwood of the world.
